There has always been a problem with cars driving way too fast on S. Sunshine Ave. between Renette & Chase, but lately it has gotten worse. The typical sound (multiple times per day, all hours of the day) is squealing tires as they try to "fishtail" out of the apartment complex driveways, followed by them gunning the engine as hard as they can all the way to either the North-side or South-side stop sign. I have already seen a dog get hit and killed on the block a few months back, and it was at an hour of the day when kids are typically walking home from school, so my biggest fear is that it will be a kid one of these times. Is there anything that can be done? I know the next stretch of Sunshine Ave. to the north has speed-bumps. What would be the process for having them installed on this stretch as well? Or would it be possible to set up officers in the area to catch these dangerous drivers? Thanks in advance for all your help!

Thanks for letting us know. I sent an e-mail to our Traffic Division about your concern. The Traffic Division will take the necessary steps to assist residents in the area. In regards to speed bumps. It has been our experience that speed bumps tend to attract people to the area to drive faster on these bumps. They are not always the answer. Anyone reading this have any ideas for speeders? Has anyone had success in solving this problem in your neighborhood? ---------- Officer Hansen El Cajon Police Department

There is a man in our neighborhood on South 2nd St. who insists on speeding. There is a speed limit posted of 15mph, however, he insists on going 50-60 mph. We have contacted the Sheriff, El Cajon Police & Highway patrol to no avail. There are children playing & cars coming off of a side street (Windmill Rd.) & this man thinks that everyone should watch out for him. We have tried to talk to him to get him to slow down & every time we try all he can do is make obscene hand gestures or yell obscenities. Please we need some help on this before someone is badly hurt or worse yet killed.

Yesterday, we got to witness firsthand one of the things we had been dreading. While leaving to go to the store, we saw a car take the turn from Chase (eastbound) to S. Sunshine (northbound) too fast. The car hopped up on the sidewalk, barely missed a stucco property wall, skidded across someone's from yard, and came to rest half in the street, and half on the sidewalk. God forbid there had been anyone walking on the sidewalk right then. They would have probably been killed. If you are interested in further details, contact the resident that lives in the first house there on S. Sunshine at the corner of Chase (big front yard). He ran out and tried to help the people as they got out of their car. He may have gotten their information as well. We didn't stick around.

This is in reply to Jukebox I was just reviewing the messages and see that the problem is continuing. I work in the evening hours (530p-600a) Monday-Wednesday and would like to help with incidnet. Can you isolate a time in the evening when theses incidents occur the most. This way I can put together a group of officers to work the area. Off. Rosas 619 579-3300 X0163 mrosas@ci.el-cajon.ca.us

In reponse to Jukebox On September 10 between the hours of 630p thru 800p Officers Murphy, Smith and I did a selective enforcement detail for traffic violators in the area of 900 South Sunshine. During the detail several driver's were cited for speed and two vehicles were impounded with 30 day holds placed on them. As Staffing allows we will try to continue and work in the area. Off. On Sept 17 Officers Pollard, BReakall and I went back out to Sunshine to work speed enforcement. We later found out that a concerned citizen was at the intersection of Chase and Sunshine slowing people down prior to them getting to us. As a result we had no speeders tonight, but it's good to see others out spreading the word about speeders on your street. We'll try again soon as we can.

Speeding on Mollison is awful too. I live on 700 block and hear street racing at night sometimes. I also frequently see a large lifted white pick up racing down the street. Last week I watched him closely ( less the 2 feet) tail a car in front on him and then veer into the center median to pass the car, but instead ended up going opposite way on street nearly hitting two cars head on since he veered too far over. My living room in on the street and I do not want to see someone end up in it. Is there anything we can do about the speeders? Signs, radar officer hiding out ticketing people?

Been a while since I checked this board, but THANK YOU OFFICER!!! It's been a bit better lately! I still catch the occasional speeded flooring their accelerators down the block (in particular, two newer-model Mustangs...one silver...one black, and a royal blue pickup truck with white quarter-panels). But I want you to know that the children in the neighborhood are all benefitting from your help! I've seen them actually out playing and riding bikes more often since the crack-down! Wonderful that they should get to enjoy their childhoods the way I did (without fear of being run over!) KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!

I am glad the enforcement is helping. Our shift does not start until 6pm. I still get out there a few times through out the week. I'll continue to do so as time allows. Off. M Rosas mrosas@ci.el-cajon.ca.us 619 579-3300 x 0163

On 10/31 I had the chance to do some speed enforcement in the area. I cited 3 for speed, and had 2 impounds for people drivign on suspended drivers license. I'll keep checking back as I can. Off. Rosas

Awesome work by the way...I saw the cars getting towed on Halloween...lots of kids out that day, and yet these people with suspended licenses were speeding on a residential street! I applaud your efforts. By the way...it looks like most of the speeders are doing it before your shift starts...usually I notice it between 3pm-6pm on weekdays...weekends are harder to pin down. But hey, every time someone gets a ticket there, it serves as notice to everyone. I hope you get a chance to continue your occasional visits! Thanks!!!

I was happy to see the Your Speed Trailer was parked on Evilo St for a few days. It was amazing how everyone driving on our street did the speed limit. Now that it's gone, the speeders are back. I sure wish we could have some speed humps installed. Evilo seems to be the short cut around 1st and Madison light. Also while I'm on the subject of Evilo St. Some of my neighbors have reported seeing a couple of Coyotes cruising our street in the middle of the night. Is that possible? Coyotes down in the middle of the city? I have not seen them, yet.
