I saw mention in another comment that sneakers are being thrown up over pole wires to indicate and mark "gang territories". Is this true?
It seemed coincidental that I just noticed sets of sneakers being wrapped p in the wires recently on Oakdale St, just East of 2nd St. There are a bunch of apartments on that street and I wondered how much gang activity is known in that area?
Thanks-

This is one of the urban legends. Sneakers on a telephone wire is just that sneakers on a wire.

Sgt. Zmijewski is correct. I have heard the "SNEAKERS ON THE WIRE" story related to it signifying a drug house, marking gang territory or predicting a homicide. There is no intelligence to support any of these claims.

The area of Oakdale and Second has not had a large amount of recent "gang activity". The gangs in El Cajon tend to be transient in nature and the area where they hang out typically tends to be wherever their families move to in the city.

Remember that just because someone dresses in baggy clothes and wears his hair short or shaved does not make him a gang member. However, if you see subjects who are loitering in the area and you have reason to believe they may be up to criminal activity, please do not hesitate to call the police department's non-emergency line at 619-579-3311.
