El Cajon Police E-Alert
July 22, 2009
Smoke Testing For Selected Sewers Begins Next Week
Starting next week, smoke testing will begin on City sewers and manholes in the City of El Cajon. The City has contracted with ADS Environmental Services to perform physical inspection and smoke testing within the sanitary sewer system in and around neighborhoods. Crews expect to begin notifying neighbors in the area of Melody Lane on Monday, July 27th, and begin the smoke testing on Wednesday, July 29th, after 7:00 a.m. They’ll eventually move to the industrial area of El Cajon, near Gillespie Field, and along Fletcher Parkway.
The smoke is used to find any defects or cracks in the sewer line which reduces sewage treatment costs by eliminating rain infiltration and protecting the environment. If there is a defect, smoke will exit the pipe through these breaks and make its way to the surface where it can be observed and documented by ADS field crews. On occasion, smoke could enter a home or business through defective plumbing or dry drain traps. If this happens, notify the crews working in the immediate area, or through the contact information listed below. The smoke is designed to last just a few minutes and will disappear once windows and doors are opened. The smoke used is not harmful or toxic, it does not stain, and it will not harm your pets.
